Bad weather . . . bad weather . . . bad weather!  That’s all we heard about.

But it’s true!  The furniture industry received quite a spanking from Mother Nature, this past winter and we all felt it, furniture shows, exhibitors, buyers and their customers. Even with a slow economy buyers still need to replenish and re-stock.  Therefore, it didn’t matter what you did, who you are or how much you invested, you have absolutely no control over Mother Nature’s wrath! 

Good News! From the first day of the February Edison Market moving forward, our office has gotten calls from buyers to pre-register, exclaiming needs for merchandise and their disappointment with the weather conditions, preventing them from their normal bi-annual restocking.  To further that thought, from these buyer calls, participating exhibitors at our August 3-4-5, 2014, Edison Furniture & Accessory Market will benefit from the needs of the NY, NJ, PA buyers.

Housing, Autos and Retail on the move

Happy to read the USA Today article on page 4B with information that the economy is continuing to gain strength.

It was reflected at the Karel Exposition Furniture & Accessory Markets held just a few weeks ago in Edison, New Jersey and Central Florida.

Both shows had excellent attendance and many of the stores who had low inventories came to buy and buy they did.

Within five days after the Edison, New Jersey event, well over "500" exhibit spaces were assigned and confirmed for the big winter market, February 3, 4, 5, 2014 and returning to the New Jersey Convention Center.

There will be a change of previous dates announced as the Super Bowl will be held in New Jersey and to avoid heavy traffic and other related things, the show days will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and that too is being hailed as a positive move and may become permanent.

The KEM crew then moved on to the Central Florida Furniture & Accessory Market and it was the comeback show and it surely was a wonderful comeback with exhibitors raving about the first show in three years.

When the recession came about, Florida was on top as far as foreclosures and a poor general economy so we refrained from having a market until the air cleared and this was the return.

Exhibitors are already requesting exhibit space and that will begin right around the first of the year for the September 2014 market.

Buyers are elated to have a market where they can get into their car, shop a market and return home the very same day without the expense of housing, food, transportation and just being away from their place of business.  They also can meet with regional companies for fast delivery and the other conveniences of having a local show.

Exhibitors are telling us the two or three day KEM shows are so economical and they are seeing stores they no longer seeing at markets far from their home.

(Aventura, FL)-----“I’m usually cautious, but something tells me this is going to be one of the best summers since the start of the recession,” said Larry Karel, President of Karel Exposition Management, (KEM) the nation's largest producer of regional furniture and accessory markets.

 Karel should know. He and his team have their fingers on the pulse of the furniture industry and are gearing up for two markets, Orlando, Florida and Edison, New Jersey.

KEM is returning to the Orlando area, after a brief hiatus, to produce the "77^th Central Florida Furniture & Accessory Market” at the Exhibition Building at Osceola Heritage Park, Kissimmee, Florida, August 11-12, 2013.

Karel Exposition Management, together with the Florida Home Furnishings Representative Association and the Florida Association of Furniture Manufacturers are sponsoring the show.  The highly anticipated show will feature hundreds of spaces of merchandise that attract attendees from throughout Florida and the Caribbean. The show is open to buyers from furniture stores, interior designers and specialty stores from the home furnishings industry.

According to Karel, the housing market is starting to gain steam again in Florida. “We hear it in their voices. People feel positive about the economy and are ready to do business.”

Major companies such as Carlton Manufacturing (wicker/rattan), Pelican Reef (indoor/outdoor furniture), Stanley Chair (chairs for every room) and King Koil (mattresses) along with many more are participating. “The show is less than a month away and one entire section of the hall is completely sold out,” Karel said.

           

     For people on the east coast, the “63^rdEdison Furniture&AccessoryMarket”, August 4-6, 2013, is a must attend. “Summer is a good time for buyers to replenish their inventory and from what I have seen, the merchandise available in the furniture,bedding, lighting and decorative accessories categories is great,” Karel added.

                 

      Both the “77^th Central Florida Furniture & Accessory Market” and the “63^rd Edison Furniture & Accessory Market” are regional in scope which means they draw buyers who do not attend other markets far from home. In addition, they are meeting a number of local resources and can get quick delivery. Both shows offer free parking for buyers and exhibitors

“People love our shows since they are only a vehicle ride away, no costly housing, food or transportation,” Karel stated.

Karel is the first to emphasize that regional shows are vital. “Manufacturers representatives cannot put a sofa in their car trunk to attempt a sale.”

     Larry Karel, President of Karel Exposition Management, announces today that after a brief hiatus, he is returning to the Orlando area to produce the 77th "Central Florida Furniture & Accessory Market" at Osceola Heritage Park, Kissimmee, Florida, August 11-12, 2013.

     Karel Exposition Management, the nation's largest producer of regional furniture and accessory markets together with the Florida Home Furnishings Representative Association and the Florida Association of Furniture Manufacturers are sponsoring the show.

     The highly anticipated show will feature over 300 spaces of merchandise that attracts attendees from throughout Florida and the Caribbean. The show is open to buyers from furniture stores, interior designers and specialty stores from the home furnishings industry.

     According to Karel, housing is on the upswing, the economy is improving and unemployment is diminishing in Florida. "We feel positive about the country and the economy." This show will be a bonanza for buyers and sellers across the state of Florida, "Said Karel.

     As of November, major companies such as Stanley Chair Company, Five Star Mattress, Sea Winds Trading, Carlton Manufacturing, Dixie Bedding / King Koil, Pelican Reef, Trade Wind Treasures, Charlotte International Trade and Grako International are participating.

     "The Show is eight months away and already we have sold nearly one third of the space. In addition there are a number of companies reviewing the floor layout so they can secure their space," Karel reported.

The Long Beach Market, being held November 7 & 8, 2012, is an example of the uphill climb the industry is making as this event was quite large prior to the recession and is now coming back strong with the last two events being completely sold-out.

With the economy beginning to pick up and housing more of a positive, home furnishings and accessories will once again be on the consumers mind, more and more will be marching into their favorite stores to purchase their requirements.

The KEM Furniture & Accessory markets are certainly proof of the uptick within our industry and order writing has picked up in the last six months at these events.

The Edison show, one that enables stores, designers, motels and specialty stores the opportunity to simply get into their vehicles, do their buying and return home the same day is proof of what we are saying.

The Summer Edison Furniture & Accessory market was so well attended and such an excellent order writing event for our exhibitors that nearly 600 spaces have already been sold for the Big Winter market, being held February 3-4-5, 2013, at the New Jersey Convention Center.

We are thrilled to announce the return to Florida with the Central Florida Furniture & Accessory Market, being held August 11 & 12, 2013, at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, FL.  Buyers and exhibitors will enjoy free parking and easy acceptability to make a very affordable event for all.

Just Back

The KEM staff is back from our 61st Edison Furniture & Accessory Market, held August 19-20-21, 2012 and considering the economy and the home furnishings industry the market was EXCELLENT.

So much so that nearly 500 exhibit spaces were re-assigned for the BIG Winter Market being held February 3-4-5, 2013.

As good as the market was, it could have been better if our economy was stronger, however, we believe, as did the many exhibiting companies that our industry is on the upswing... Slowly, but at least it is improving.

We are happy to announce that we have changed our summer 2013 Edison dates and will return to our usual slot, which is August 4, 5, 6, 2013 and that will allow us to not run concurrently with the gift show in New York and Ramadan.

Now on to Virginia being held September 9 & 10, 2012. Things are picking up and the show is coming along well. Buyers are calling our office interested in pre-registering as they are very happy to have a market close to home and no longer have to travel far.  One buyer in particular came into to our Edison, NJ Show office to Thank Mr. Karel for bringing a market into their region and informed him of what a good idea it was as this states housing is picking up.

Last but surely not least.. Our Long Beach Market. We are pleased as this show has continued to grow with the last two markets selling out in advance. At this point in time, another sellout is expected as the Long Beach Market, November 10 & 11, 2012 is over 300 exhibit spaces assigned.

Order Writing In the Texas Market

Order writing and New Accounts was the talk of the TEXAS FURNITURE & ACCESSORY MARKET. The KEM staff is back to conclude an excellent Texas Market held in the beautiful Irving Convention Center June 10 & 11th.

"It's QUALITY not QUANTITY" One vendor said to our KEM staff. It seems that those who are in business after this terrible recession are in need of merchandise and found our market easy to attend with the only expense being the gas in their vehicle. They came, They bought as order writing was strong for many of the participating exhibitors.

The Texas Show had it all, from Bedding to Accessories, Outdoor Furniture and even trucking as we were glad to welcome Isuzu Trucks and Classic Chevrolet. The buyers were surprised to see the vast array of new merchandise and styles that would sell for them at great prices.

The KEM staff will be returning once again to the great state of Texas as many said there is no other show like it in the region. But we will only be back once a year,  as we found that it works best for both buyers and exhibitors, annually, so  it gives them time to display new lines and styles. The Texas show will become the place to go, to get the newest and most innovative furniture to be introduces to the Industry.

WE ARE BACK AND WE ARE EXTREMLEY HAPPY!!

We're speaking about the Long Beach Furniture Market recently held in the Long Beach Convention Center,  May 6 & 7, 2012.

If there was ever a sign that the economy is on the upswing it was at our recent show with exhibitors and buyers interacting to the point that nearly 300 exhibit spaces were renewed the last day of the event.

Exhibitors tell us that they had a very successful order writing show and buyers loved the vast array of home furnishings and accessories, not to forget the category of bedding which was represented by a number of bedding companies.

We're already working on the November 7 & 8, 2012 Market at the Long Beach Convention Center and hard at work assigning space and alerting buyers to our remaining KEM shows being held in New Jersey, Texas and Virginia.

Stay tuned and hope we can continue to bring good news to the industry.

A Big Thank You

I have just gone into the 52nd year of producing trade shows and wish to thank the Home Furnishings Industry across the Country for the wonderful support we have received throughout the many years with our Furniture & Accessory Markets.


We all know our industry was hit hard . . . very hard and we are a twin of the housing industry, however, enough about all that, as we all know what was . . . now we must start thinking of what is and what will be.


Housing is better across the U.S., people will be getting jobs and will be buying or renting homes, which means the purchasing of furniture, bedding, accessories, etc.


I have read many times in the last few years that anyone who makes it through the great recession will be so far a head of anyone else and benefit greatly once business begins to return.


Here at KEM, we work hard, very hard at giving the best service we can to both our exhibitors and the buyers who attend our shows.


We are seeing a vast improvement in the mood in the region of our Long Beach Furniture Market and the show has doubled in size and selling out each time.  We recently moved to a larger exhibit hall within the Long Beach Convention Center and that is just about sold out.


The other events, Edison, New Jersey, Irving, Texas and the new market in Fredericksburg, Virginia are all on the upswing as well.


I love this business and hope to keep writing on our blog for many years to come.
